How the Instagram Algorithm Works
Do you hate the Instagram algorithm? Yeah, we all do. It just makes it so hard to reach your audience. Long gone are the days when everyone would see your post. Recently, it was revealed that Instagram users were seeing only 30% of all posts and only 50% of their friend’s posts. This was reversed in the middle of 2016 and relevancy sorting has taken its place. It is now said that Instagram’s 800 million users are now seeing 90% of their friend’s posts. Lucky for us, Instagram recently revealed how the Instagram Algorithm Works.
How the Instagram Algorithm Works
The explanation was given by Julian Gutman, Instagram’s product lead.
Criteria for Ranking
Everyone on Instagram has a custom feed which is based on your past behavior and how you interact with accounts. There are a few main things Instagram considers when deciding what to show in your feed:
Interest
They try to figure out what posts you will care about by measuring the way you engaged with past content that was similar.
Recency
Instagram prioritizes posts that have just been posted.
Relationship
If you’ve engaged with someone’s posts a lot in the past, their posts will be prioritized on your feed.
Frequency
Instagram keeps tabs on how often you open the app and it shows you what they consider the best posts since the last time you visited.
Following
The more people you follow, the less variety you will see in your feed (makes sense since if you’re following 5,000 you can’t possibly see them all).
Usage
If you hop on Instagram for a few seconds, it’s going to show you the best posts quickly to try to get you to stay. If you spend a long time on the network, it will show you more varied content.
Things That Don’t Affect The Algorithm
Instagram Does Not Hide Posts
If you scroll long enough, you will see everything by everyone you follow.
Photos over Video
Instagram does not prioritize video over photo or vice versa. However, your feed is affected by the content you like, so if you like videos more than you like photos, then your personal algorithm will favor videos.
Instagram Stories Have No Effect on Reach
According to Julian, Instagram does not prioritize posts by those who use Stories, Live, or other Instagram features.
Instagram Does Not Penalize Frequent Posters
Instagram won’t penalize you if you post a lot, but it may spread around your content so as not to bore your audience.
No Difference in Reach for Personal or Business
Instagram does not prioritize either type of account.
There’s No Such Thing As Shadowbanning
According to Julian, there is no shadowbanning and people’s content is not hidden because they use too many hashtags.
